Safety
While conducting any experiment you should always be cautious of the materials around you. Always wear your safety goggles when conducting the experiment, hair should be tied up (if you have long hair), and avoid loose strings from clothes. Always keep the glassware and dangerous equipment away from the edge of the table. This experiment may be one of the safer experiments but following these safety procedures will keep you away from injury.
Methods/Procedures
Follow the Safety Procedures.
Collect the materials and place them on an empty (flat) surface. (look at the picture above for an example)
Get a 30-second timer ready.
Place a beaker onto the weighing scale.
Set the weighing scale to tare/zero.
Weigh 0.4 grams of Yeast into the beaker (with the tablespoon).
Leave the beaker containing yeast to the side and grab the graduated cylinder.
Add 10ml of 1% hydrogen peroxide into the graduated cylinder (for more accuracy and consistency) *use a pipette if necessary*
Grab the stirring stick and stir until the lumps (of yeast) are gone.
Record the mass of the yeast and hydrogen peroxide combined (onto your laptop or paper)
Start the 30-second timer.
After the 30 seconds record the mass of the hydrogen peroxide and yeast (onto laptop or paper)
Repeat steps 2~12 three times with the 1% solution of hydrogen peroxide.
Repeat procedures 2~13 for both 3% and 5% solutions instead of 1%
Wash the used materials.
Use paper towels to dry off the materials.
