Global warming is a huge problem we are facing nowadays, our planet is being destroyed as well as natural resources. We need to take action and try our best to have a positive impact on our environment. Even small changes matter and things that we might see as so small can lead to a significant change. Here are some easy things you can do in order to have a more eco-friendly lifestyle.
1. Use less paper
Not only is it easier to organize and to access later on, but taking notes electronically is a smart way to reduce paper waste. As a school, reducing our paper waste is something we should be doing. Unfortunately, for some classes such as math, taking digital notes might be hard but for most subjects, it should not be a problem.
2. Walk or bike more
In addition to being good for your health, walking and/or biking will help you reduce the total air pollution and greenhouse gases of your area. Especially for small distances, such walking to your bus stop instead of taking the car, this is very easy to do. If you live close to our school, you might want to walk or bike to the school.
3. Clean your email inbox
Our carbon footprint also applies to digital things, as an international school, the number of emails we are sending and receiving are endless. Starting by having a cleaner inbox would be a good start. For example, unsubscribe from newsletters you do not read, try to avoid sending useless emails just for the sake of answering emails, delete old emails from your inbox, etc.
4. Reduce your online researches
In one click on google we can have access to so many websites and answers. It is quick but it also requires a lot of energy. Again, as an IB school thinking before searching on the internet is something we should work on. For example, being more specific about what information we want in order to avoid multiple searches, or avoiding to take the extra step of searching for a website then click on the link to get there, instead, type the exact name in order to get directly to the website. You could also use eco-friendly browsers such as Ecosia (who plants trees).
5. Decrease meat consumption
Eating meat has harmful effects on our planet’s ecological system, reducing our meat consumption is a smart way to reduce our impact on the environment. A smart way to implement this in our life might be to start by eating a vegetarian meal at least once a week during lunch.
